In 1984 the Vermillion Food Pantry was started by Trinity Lutheran Church. We were a very small operation that worked out of Trinity Lutheran’s kitchen. That year we fed 34 persons. Through the years we have continued to grow. We have fed 2400 persons in Clay County in 2010! We became a non-profit 501c3 Corporation in 1998, and Trinity asked for Vermillion Community’s help that year. We have moved three different times within the Trinity Building in the last 25 years. Each time the Pantry moved, we expanded into bigger area for our growing needs. Our Board of Directors reflects our city and our rural use of the Pantry. The Vermillion Food Pantry started with one-person filling food sacks and one person giving out the food sacks. Today we have 85 volunteers helping with the Pantry – filling food boxes, sorting foods, dispensing food boxes to families, picking up pizza and bread, and picking up vegetables and fruits from grocery stores in Vermillion. This Food Pantry is community based; which means that we receive no funding from Clay County or the City of Vermillion.
